Already at the start of construction in the 1960s, Märkisches Viertel was controversial and fulfilled many prejudices against social housing. The high building density and poorly planned infrastructure inevitably led to problems in the early days. After the energetic renovation, the external appearance of the large housing estate has changed significantly. Still impressive today is how well living and traffic are separated from each other and how many areas can be used by the general public.
