2024 Friedrichstraße – documentary photography: photo series and photo story, photos by Andreas Muhs
Friedrichstraße, Berlin-Mitte and Kreuzberg, 2024, 36 photos, analogue
The over three-kilometer-long Friedrichstraße runs from Berlin-Mitte in the north to Berlin-Kreuzberg in the south. It not only connects the eastern and western parts of the city at Checkpoint Charlie but also social contrasts – from exclusive quarters to social housing at Mehringplatz. At the same time, the street is increasingly losing its appeal: numerous shops in the newly built passages are empty. The closure of the French department store Lafayette's branch was certainly the most severe blow. Today, Friedrichstraße is further than ever from its historical significance.
