2023 Vietnam II – documentary photography: photo series and photo story, photos by Andreas Muhs

Vietnam II, Berlin-Alt-Hohenschönhausen, 2023, 40 photos, analogue

The Plattenbauten in Berlin-Alt-Hohenschönhausen were built for contract workers from Vietnam who were supposed to work in the GDR. The buildings have been vacant for quite some time and have now been gutted down to the bare concrete. After some investors had rolled up their advertising banners and the overgrowth had been cleared away, it was time to start a second attempt at a series about this Plattenbau district. I had discovered the site by chance in 2010. Back then, the vegetation was still dense and wild. The muggy summer day provided the perfect illusion of moving through a field of ruins in Southeast Asia. Many testimonies of the Vietnamese people's lives were still visible. Nothing of that remains in 2023.
