2023 Berolina – documentary photography: photo series and photo story, photos by Andreas Muhs

Berolina, Berlin-Mitte und Friedrichshain, 2023, 44 photos, analogue

The Jacobystraße and Berolinastraße run parallel to Karl-Marx-Allee. This series shows the buildings and green spaces in the second row, away from the showcase buildings on the Karl-Marx-Allee main thoroughfare. There are still unaltered corners there, and on the roofs of the concrete slab buildings, one can find advertisements for “LKW Tatra Motokov” and “balkancarpodem bulgarien”. I refer to the district, built as a prestige project, as “Berolina”, named after the demolished hotel that once stood behind Kino International. With the “Berolina” series, a new phase begins for me. I choose smaller areas in the city for my documentations. These can be long-established districts or ones that have just emerged. I limit myself to black and white film and the square image format. With a few exceptions, the sequence of images in the book is chronological, thus preserving the local relationships between the individual motifs. I try to implement this idea in many of my series.
