The Anschutz-Areal is being built on the site of the former freight yard near Ostbahnhof. The names change – O2, Mercedes-Benz, Uber... – but this place, designed according to American models, remains. It is hard to imagine that a true Kiez will form in the long run between the start-up offices, the restaurants of well-known fast-food chains, and the arenas for top acts in sports and entertainment, which are announced, advertised, and illuminated by glaring displays. An artificial world that has nothing to do with Berlin – and that within sight of the longest remaining fragment of the Berlin Wall.
