1996 Untergrund – documentary photography, photos by Andreas Muhs

Untergrund, Berlin, 1996, 31 photos, analogue

The series was originally commissioned by a magazine and subsequently expanded by me. The underground, i.e., the walkable surface, was a subject in itself in the eastern part of Berlin. For the shots, I used the Russian panoramic camera "Horizon", in which the lens rotates 120 degrees during exposure. I used the camera, which was actually designed for horizontal panoramas, in portrait format. I walked on the underground with my polished Dr. Martens boots and released the shutter by feel, without being able to look through the attachable viewfinder. The blurred parts of the images resulted from my own movement, the rotation of the lens, and the relatively long exposure times.
